Kythera of Anevern (Joana Contreras) is a fantasy artist who works in both traditional and digital media, and often combines the two to bring her visions to life. As a child, her art education consisted almost exclusively of self-taught trial, error, and practice. Throughout middle school and high school she enrolled in art classes, and then went on to earn a B.F.A. in Intermedia from Arizona State University.
Her work has appeared in various role-playing game supplements from Mongoose Publishing, Ruminant Productions, and other small publishers. She has also been featured in the readers' gallery and contributed a tutorial to the Official Corel Painter Magazine.
Kythera's art is heavily influenced by animation, fantasy, Celtic and Norse mythology, the Middle Ages, and symphonic heavy metal music and is executed with obsessive attention to detail. She relishes drawing subjects like dragons, monsters, and things that go bump in the night, which is inherently challenging because real-life references for these subjects is exceedingly hard to come by.
She can be found showing occasionally at small venues around Los Angeles. Formerly a regular contributor to the Gathering of the Gargoyles art show, she is now a regular fixture in the artist's alley at Anime Expo as part of ZOMGWTF!? Studios.
