A Fun Tip for Pet Portraits

Cooking Up Healthy, Homemade Feasts for Pets

Sometimes it takes some tasty treats to convince your furry family members to sit still for that perfect portrait shot. Homemade treats can be a fun and healthy way to reward your pets for a sucessful modeling session.

My beagle Lance is an incredibly playful guy, but he takes his food very seriously. The first thing he does in the morning—after stretching and shaking out his big ears—is run and sit by his food dish, waiting as patiently as possible for breakfast.

Beagles are very food driven. He will do just about anything for the reward of a treat. Knowing this, deciding what to feed your dog (or cat) can be one of the most challenging parts of having an animal. Don't Google dog diets unless you are prepared for the bottomless rabbit hole of theories and opinions and facts and science.

There are the raw food advocates, the cooked food advocates, the kibble allegiant, the utterly unconcerned. Regardless of the route a pet owner chooses to go, it's pretty clear animals, like humans, needs nutrients, and not all pet foods are created equal.

The Healthy Homemade Pet Food Cookbook by Barbara Taylor-Laino is a perfect companion for any loving pet owner, whether you decide to cook all of your animal's meals or if you are just looking for fun snacks to pique a furry buddy's interest.

The book includes 75 whole food recipes and treats, as well as a detailed account of the author's background and approach to animal diets. Some of the recipes are rather involved, but the logic behind Barbara's approach is sound. Her anecdotal evidence points to pets being healthier, happier and more energetic when fed whole foods.

Though he will eat anything—literally, anything—Lance particularly loves to devour sweet potatoes. They are good for digestion and easy to prepare. I know he'd love to taste test the baked sweet potato and chicken recipe shown below.
