Making Art

Drawing Cute Animals in Colored Pencil

The title pretty much says it all. I've always been the type to doodle small drawings on papers, notebooks, and journals, and lately I've been having fun with colored pencil illustrations. I try to keep a few bright colors near my couch so that I can practice drawing whenever I'm watching TV. Though sometimes I can't have colored pencils with me, it's always fun to start a drawing in pen and add that splash of color later.

The elephant illustrations in this book stole my heart as soon as I saw them. I think it's the softness in the expressions (and perhaps a well-placed set of girly eyelashes here and there) that make all of the animal drawings in Drawing Cute Animals in Colored Pencil so darn adorable.

My favorite part: the contents pages. How clever to illustrate the contents as a little zoo?

The instructions for how to draw this sweet elephant are accompanied by some fun tidbits about elephants that can really take your drawing up a notch. Have you ever really thought about what an elephant's knee looks like? Those are the details that can bring a drawing to life!
