"It's my job to make things look cool."
–Drew Brophy

Artwork by Drew Brophy and excerpted from How to Draw with Drew Brophy

World famous surf artist Drew Brophy began painting in his 20's and today is the best known surfboard artist in the world. He has expanded his painting beyond surfboards to wakeboards, shoes, guitars, and more.

Using Drew Brophy's technique and instruction, I attempted to mimic a snail from his collection.

Something to note: although Drew uses colored pencils for laying out initial designs, he uses water based paint markers when he puts his design onto surfboards or wakeboards.

First step: starting off with a basic pencil outline and then filling it in with color pencils.

Next, I used darker shades of the same color and followed Drew's advice for shading.

And for the final step, I used a white colored pencil for highlights and a thick black line to outline where I first used pencil.

Drew Brophy has a style that is all his own and easy to recognize. In this book, he gives easy to follow directions on how you can achieve the "Drew Brophy" look. Happy drawing!

Is there an artist whose style you admire and would like to learn?
