Art Resolutions Part I

Happy New Year

It's time to say "goodbye" to 2013 and "aloha" to a brand new year with a fresh, blank canvas ahead. I like to think of the turn of year as a great time to revisit goals and set a vision for the things I want to accomplish in the 12 months to come. Art grew to be a big part of my life in 2013, and I'm excited to see how my style and technique evolve in 2014. Tomorrow I'll tell you about how I'm approaching my art resolutions, but today I wanted to throw a little handlettering inspiration your way.

What better way to get excited about making resolutions than to draw them out in a fun and creative way?

Calligraphy and lettering are a great way to exercise your art muscles AND get your thoughts out on paper. I used acrylic paint, and I tried both my personal handwriting and a few alphabet styles from The Art of Calligraphy and Lettering. Don't be afraid to develop your own embellishments as you learn to write in a calligraphy style.

Check out this sample alphabet called "Anime"—a whimsical lettering style, excerpted from The Art of Calligraphy and Lettering.
