Blogger's Guide to Taking Great Photos

A Glimpse of Picture Perfect Social Media

"Photography is a way of feeling, of touching, of loving. What you have caught on film is captured remembers little things, long after you have forgotten everything." ~ Aaron Siskind

This quote recognizes the impact of capturing and sharing beautiful, everyday images: we want to remember the little things that make our lives special. Having great images is an essential way to connect with people all over the world. Whether you use Instagram, Facebook, Twitter, Pinterest, a blog, or a variety of social media platforms, you'll want to have the skills to make your images stand out from the crowd. With Picture Perfect Social Media by Jennifer Young, you'll have the resources you need to do just that and much more.

The aim of the book? "To help improve your photography skills through practical guidelines and shared knowledge from creatives with a unique eye and perspective, who have had success in growing their social network in an overly saturated image-centric online world."

The book is divided into three sections:

1. Essential information on choosing the right camera, creating great shots, and photography etiquette. It has excellent tips for using everything from analog cameras to Smartphones.

2. Advice from seven prominenent lifestyle bloggers about capturing all kinds of subjects from pets, to food, to fashion.

3. A look at the technical side of photography, so you know how to edit, store, and share your images.

I was drawn to "Chapter 5: Kids," by Oana Befort, a freelance graphic designer and illustrator based in Bucharest, Romania. She began her blog after the birth of her son in order to capture everyday life with her little one. Her tips?

"Be spontaneous. Let them be natural. Focus on personality and special features. Be on the move. Opt for natural light. Get creative. Be patient. Notice the little details."

For example, here's how she captured her son's love of music:

She encourages parents to capture a child's everyday activities and get down on their level to see things from their perspective. Also, it helps to photograph them in their everyday environment (a park, a playroom, the kitchen, etc.) so they're most comfortable. Then you don't have to work so hard to get a smile.

I tried some of her techniques with my smartphone and captured some cute pictures from my daughters' everyday life. They both love the outdoors, and these shots turned out sweet and carefree.
