Composition
Applying the Rule of Thirds Another method for effectively placing your focal point is following the rule of thirds, also called the “intersection of thirds.” Divide your painting surface into thirds horizontally and vertically; then place your focal point at or near one of the points where the lines intersect. This keeps your center of interest away from the extremes—corners, dead center, or the very top or bottom of your composition—and allows for more asymmetry in your composition.

PLACING THE FOCUS Here the thumbnail sketch has been divided into thirds horizontally and vertically, and the focal point is indicatedbythe circle where two of the lines intersect. As you can see in the more finished sketch to the right, the focal point (the wildflower) is placed in the upper right corner of the scene, providing visual interest.
