Learn How to Paint a Carmel Sidewalk Street Scene in Oil

how to paint a street scene in oil

Step Two

The next step in this oil painting helps to refine the fixtures in the street scene. I mix blue-violet, flesh, and Payne’s gray to paint the window frames and doorways. Next I mix a variety of different greens for the trees, using sap green, brilliant green light, yellow ochre, and flesh. I “draw” in the trees with a small flat sable brush, referring to my reference photo to guide my color choices. Then I block in the signs and awnings with a mix of cadmium orange and alizarin crimson. I add more detail to the shadows in the street with the Payne’s gray and cerulean blue mixture from step one. I paint some of the negative space in the distance with a mixture of brilliant yellow and white.
