Step One
I begin the palm tree oil painting by creating a contrasting underpainting. I use a mix of alizarin crimson, dioxazine purple, Indian yellow, transparent orange, and magenta.
I thin the mixture with turpentine and apply the wash with a medium brush. I will be dedicating the top two thirds of the canvas to the sky, so I decide to paint more orange on the sky area, as orange is the complement of blue. I do this with a mix of Indian yellow, transparent orange, and quinacridone pink. Then I let the paint dry before continuing to the next step.
