Watercolor Painting Techniques

Watercolor Techniques

There are a number of watercolor application techniques that create dynamic visual effects—many of which are dependent on moisture, or lack thereof! Add generous amounts of water to your paint to create thin, translucent layers of color; or use less water to produce heavier, more opaque strokes. You also can use a dry brush and minimal moisture to create rough, broken textures. And the moistness of the support itself also will affect your strokes—producing controlled brushstrokes or spontaneous blends. As you’ll soon learn, controlling moisture is essential to working with watercolor!
