Follow these step-by-step instructions and learn to draw a butterfly in colored pencil.
Step 1 Draw a butterfly outline, including the wing pattern, with a pencil.
Step 2 Fill in the butterfly wings with a bright-yellow colored pencil. Use a kneaded eraser to lighten your sketch outline as you go.
Step 3 Using a yellow-orange colored pencil, stroke over the sections of wing already colored, letting some of the yellow show through. Using the same colored pencil, fill in the right pupil and antenna.
Step 4 Use a red-orange colored pencil to stroke over the filled in areas of the wings once again, this time letting some of the yellow orange show through. Next use a reddish-brown colored pencil to fill in the wing borders on the left side of the butterfly, as well as the right eye and antenna.
Step 5 Using purple and blue colored pencils, fill in the corresponding parts of the butterfly's wings. Add blue to the left eye and antenna.
Step 6 Using a black colored pencil, fill in the large empty areas, overlapping and blending as you go. Now you have learned to draw a butterfly in colored pencil!
Creativity is not the finding of a thing, but the making something out of it after it is found.
